Radar and Lidar Applications

Aims

This intensive training course will provide critical knowledge and understanding in the use of remote sensing data for natural disaster monitoring and mapping. We will focus on the use of LiDAR and radar remote sensing methods that complement more traditional optical remotes sensing approaches. Basic principles of radar (microwave) and LiDAR (laser scanner) satellite and airborne image data sets are introduced. Specific examples in the theme of elevation modelling, environmental pollution mapping and fire disturbance will be explored. The course will be of interest to those undertaking research or in employment that utilises satellite and aircraft data at graduate, postgraduate or faculty level within the public or private sector. The training course will describe how we can use alternative data sets to Landsat or other similar missions. The method of instruction will comprise both lectures and computer practicals working with real image data. Time for discussion and debate in application areas will be made available.

Learning Outcomes

  At the end of the course, you will be able to:1. Demonstrate understanding of radar remote sensing in the context of better understanding the use of satellite data for applications of natural hazards and environmental monitoring. 2. Demonstrate understanding of lidar remote sensing in the context of better understanding the use of satellite data for applications of natural hazards and environmental modelling and monitoring. 3. Understand how these data sets can be used in the context of these applications through addressing specific examples and engagement with the literature and processing of data.

Coursework And Assignment Details

  There will be 2 pieces of assessment: 1. Multiple choice test on Friday afternoon (~35 questions in 30 minutes – 20 radar, 5 InSAR, 15 LiDAR). This is worth 33% of the module. Marked immediately and feedback provided. 2. The completion of a short project to download, analyse and assess the information content of Sentinel-1 image using the Sentinel took box. Specifics given on the Friday morning session with a hand in date of the following Friday at 5pm (Greece time) giving you a period of 1 week to complete. The report should be no longer than a 1,000 words, not including any Reference List. This is worth 67% of the module.
