DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TOMATO CULTIVARS BY USING OMICS TECHNOLOGIES
// v-TOMATOMICS //

Project Summary

v-Tomatomics plans to use new high-throughput technologies for biomolecular analysis (omics) to produce new Greek tomato varieties, either in the form of hybrids or inbred lines, to improve post-harvest behavior, nutritional value and productivity.

Actions

  • Use genotype by sequencing and omics technologies such as genomics, transcriptomics, glycoproteomics, metabolomics and phenomics
  • Characterize and utilize the traditional Greek tomato varieties (landraces) and the existing genetic material, at various stages of breeding

Goals

  • Improve the nutritional value, productivity, shelf-life and quality of traditional tomato varieties
  • Use genomic approaches to incorporate resistance to diseases
  • Offer distinct varieties of local origin with differentiated flavor, shape and size
  • Create a science-based online platform enriched with research data
  • Increase the income of farmers and related businesses
